چکیده

Abstract The insecticide resistance in Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes has remained the major threat for vector control programs but fitness effects conferred by these mechanisms are poorly understood. To fill this knowledge gap, present study aimed at testing hypothesis that antibiotic oxytetracycline could have an interaction with genotypes and consequently inhibit fecundity An. gambiae. Four strains of gambiae: Kisumu (susceptible), KisKdr (kdr (L1014F) resistant), AcerKis (ace-1 (G119S) resistant) AcerKdrKis (both kdr ace-1 were used study. different allowed to bloodfeed on a rabbit previously treated concentration 39·10–5 M. Three days later, ovarian follicles dissected from individual mosquito ovaries into physiological saline solution (0.9% NaCl) under stereomicroscope eggs counted. Fecundity was substantially lower oxytetracycline-exposed females when compared untreated individuals females. exposed displayed increased their nontreated counterparts whereas they had reduced There no substantial difference between Our data indicate indirect effect reducing carrying kdrR genotype. These findings be useful designing new integrated approaches malaria endemic countries.

Spatial and temporal variation in kinship among Anopheles gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquitoes.

Genetic relatedness (kinship) among Anopheles gambiae Giles female mosquitoes was assessed using microsatellite loci in five locations across Africa and in nine samples taken between 1994 and 1999 in western Kenya. We assessed variation among samples in kinship as well as the effect of distance on kinship. Relatedness within populations was low, and differences among samples taken at various ti...

Fauna, Abundance, Distribution and Seasonal Activity of Anopheles Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in Larval habitats

Introduction: Mosquito – borne diseases are a major public health threat in the world, including Iran. This investigation was undertaken to determine fauna, distribution, frequency and monthly activity of Anopheles larvae in Aligoudarz County. Methods: This descriptive research was carried out during April to December 1997 to study Anopheles mosquitoes fauna and seasonal activity in seven...

A simple method for sampling indoor-resting malaria mosquitoes Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles funestus (Diptera: Culicidae) in Africa.

Sampling indoor resting African malaria vectors is traditionally done by hand catches with oral or mechanical aspirators and pyrethrum spray catches (PSCs). In this study, we designed and briefly evaluated an inexpensive but practical alternative by using a cloth resting box or wicker resting basket and a ceiling net. Evaluations were performed in greenhouse and field situations in rural Kenya ...

Stable chromosomal inversion polymorphisms and insecticide resistance in the malaria vector mosquito Anopheles gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae).

Anopheles gambiae Giles has been implicated as a major vector of malaria in Africa. A number of paracentric chromosomal inversions have been observed as polymorphisms in wild and laboratory populations of this species. These polymorphisms have been used to demonstrate the existence of five reproductive units in West African populations that are currently described as incipient species. They hav...

Mating affects egg maturation in Anopheles gambiae Giles (Diptera: Culicidae).

The effect of mating on egg development and the size of the female accessory glands during the gonotrophic cycle of Anopheles gambiae was investigated. Although females that received a measured meal of blood were more likely to produce an egg batch when they were mated, the increased reproduction was not the result of male accessory gland substances. Changes in the size of the female accessory ...
